Amerikaanse volwassenen die zich nog niet hebben laten vaccineren tegen COVID-19 moeten een nieuwe optie van Novavax overwegen, die een traditioneler type vaccin is, zeiden federale gezondheidsfunctionarissen dinsdag.

Een maand nadat de federale regering het COVID-19 vaccin voor kinderen onder de 5 jaar heeft goedgekeurd, hebben ongeveer 300.000 Amerikaanse kinderen in die leeftijdsgroep ten minste één dosis van het vaccin gekregen, aldus een ambtenaar van de regering Biden.
Volgens een nieuwe studie heeft het Amerikaanse COVID-vaccinatieprogramma honderdduizenden levens gered tijdens de eerste twee golven van de pandemie, waardoor het verwachte sterftecijfer van het coronavirus met maar liefst 58% is gedaald.
Pfizer en zijn partner BioNTech hebben woensdag plannen aangekondigd om een vaccin te ontwikkelen dat zal werken tegen SARS-CoV-2 (het virus dat COVID-19 veroorzaakt) en de hele klasse, of familie, van verwante coronavirussen.
Omdat het virus zo snel muteert, kan de FDA de nieuwe vaccinformuleringen goedkeuren nu verwacht wordt dat de COVID-gevallen deze winter weer zullen toenemen.
